Summary

This session will focus on building knowledge, skills and attitudes to provide culturally humble and responsive care birthing and parenting people. By promoting cultural humility, providers and birth workers can build trust and rapport with clients from diverse backgrounds and communities, reduce power imbalances, and empower patients and families to make informed decisions about their healthcare. Webinar begins at 1pm EASTERN Time.

Session Outline: 

  • Introduction: What is cultural humility? 
  • Differentiating between cultural competency and cultural humility 
  • Review and discuss cultural humility from perspectives of oppression, privilege, and marginaliztion 
  • Discuss tools, resources and ways one can lead with a lens of cultural humility 
  • Conclusion 

Objectives:

  1. Understand and define cultural humility 
  2. Differentiate between cultural competency and cultural humility 
  3. Discuss approaches to reduce power of imbalances and promote patient autonomy

  • NBCC: 1 continuing education contact hour. Postpartum Support International has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6765. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified.
